Jewelry Stash

Have you ever lost a piece of jewelry? Well, two weeks ago, I misplaced one of my favorite rings. I was so upset with myself about it. Sure, there are more important things to be worked up about. But this is a ring I bought myself a few years ago when I hit a significant business milestone. It's this delicate gold and diamond nail ring. I wear it every day. It's a special reminder to me about potential and accomplishment.

The problem was that I stored the ring in a little dish next to my sink in my bathroom. Talk about living on the edge! I told myself it was okay to do this because I'm responsible and don't lose things. It's convenient to slip on and off where I start and finish my day. But that thought pattern was the issue.

I didn't initially look down the drain because I had already brushed my teeth and washed my face by the time I realized my ring was gone. In my mind, it was forever adrift in the drain abyss. But today, with the encouragement of a friend, we pulled the stopper out, and there it was, sitting about 4" below the surface, too large to flow down entirely. What a relief! I also know this isn't usually the case with drain-diving jewels — this was luck at hand!

It's an odd coincidence that I looked at the ring the day it went missing and thought, I should move this away from the sink. My intuition foreshadowed it going missing. And then this morning, at a client closet session, this very concept came up in conversation. She mentioned to me that our mutual friend, Anne Pokoski, a jewelry consultant, recently shared with her the importance of not putting your jewelry on in the bathroom. Or, in my case, leaving it within inches of the sink. This conversation sparked my pipe pursuit, and alas, there it was! Another odd coincidence.

My jewelry stash now lives safely with my other jewelry, far from the bathroom, where it belongs. Not by the sink. Or in a space with tile floors... heaven forbid you drop a piece on the ground, and it shatters. If your daily jewelry stash is living in your bathroom, it's time to move it.
