How to Reconstruct Suiting as Separates

Maximize the Wear of What You Own

Workwear is changing — emphasis on casualization and comfort — but what does that mean exactly? It’s not the same across the board by any means for everyone and it gets more nuanced within industries, company culture, and what your day-to-day looks like. It is, however, a great rethink of what’s hanging in your closet. Here are four ways to style suiting as separates (two in menswear, two in womenswear) for a new take on polished everyday work style.

Menswear — Suit Jacket Styling

STYLE TIP:

Swap your slacks with a straight leg, well-fitted dark wash jean. Ditch the oxford for a soft knit henley. Pair the jeans with a polished weekend boot and you’re ready to go from work to drinks.

Menswear — Suit Trouser Styling

STYLE TIP:

Swap your sports jacket/blazer out for a more paired down polished style. Consider a different material like felt, suede, nylon or leather. Ditch the belt with these trousers for a modern pairing with elevated sneakers.

Womenswear — Suit Jacket Styling

STYLE TIP:

Mix up this statement blazer with a change in textures like a silk skirt, pant, or even a denim. This silk maxi skirt brings out the colors in the jacquard and takes a client-forward look from day to an evening out with friends. Layer over tall boots to stay warm and don’t be afraid to pair this ensemble with a statement necklace layered over a turtleneck.

Womenswear — Suit Trousers Styling

STYLE TIP:

Don’t be afraid to layer over a wide leg trouser. With a heel this statement style pant looks great on every body. Whatever you’re pairing on top, be sure that there’s a tailored fit to the shoulders, sleeves, and chest to strike the right balance of comfort and chicness.

When pairing with a crisp top, skip tucking in and instead try an oversized style, just leave the bottom 1-3 buttons undone for a subtle styling moment that’s sure to flatter. Counter balance the long top with a shorter sweater layered over.
